MEMORIES OF JAPAN

This project was produced during my residency in Japan during the Internacional Seto Ceramic & Glass Art Exchange Program in October and November 2022. It has been exposed at Setoshin Art Gallery. Aichi / Japan and some of the works remain as a permanent collection in the Seto City Museum of Fine Arts.

With my sculptural work I like to experiment and reflect on the connection between form, material and essence through which life is represented. In this group of work, my goal was to give the pieces a voice of their own by incorporating the idea of sound. I was looking for a way to make them sound or vibrate to create a more vivid and interactive connection with them.

The sound of these pieces can only be heard when the piece is played or touched, something that I did personally while I was building them, listening, looking for what sound I wanted to feel when I had them near me. Therefore the pieces adjust to parts of my body, and I embrace them as a memory that I do not want to forget, I take care of them and pamper them so that despite the distance I will always feel connected to them.

They represent the time, the energy of discovery and wonder of my time in Seto. I recorded their sound to be able to listen to it in Spain. In Japan, the pieces will stay silent, preserving the energy and the possibility of being played. If at some point someone plays them, or they sound by chance, that voice, that melody will have all the timbres of nostalgia, of the time when I was here. The pieces sound when they are caressed, touched or moved gently. People who visited the exhibition could approach, touch and listen to them from this place of tenderness.
