Fränsta - In my head

This work is the result of the artist-in-residence stay in Västernorrland, Fränsta, Sweden during the months of September and October 2023.
The residency offered a unique time and space to get out of the routine and dedicate a few weeks to connect with new ideas. The goal I set for this stay was to develop a new work that could represent the intimate connection I have with the pieces I create and that I feel almost like an extension of my body; I wanted to be able to convey the idea of an object that contains vibrations and emotions. It was also important that this work act as a catalyst for everything that I might experience during these weeks.
The residency took place in a unique environment in northern Sweden. The landscapes and the silence of nature surrounding the center are of overwhelming beauty and intensity. In a Nordic society so far away from the typical social events of the Mediterranean culture, and a language so incomprehensible to me, I was shocked to feel how I missed the connection with people and experienced loneliness and isolation in a very intense way in a totally unexpected way. This project became a reflection on isolation, silence and inner voices. I also wanted to transform my usual way of working in solitude, connecting in an intimate way with the pieces, and I opened myself to share the artistic experience in the community to use it as a tool to exchange experiences and connect with the rest of the local artists.
The project was inspired by ancient methods of communication, such as the early tube systems used to communicate between rooms in the late 19th century. The montage was presented at the Alsta Folkhöskola Musikhuset as a performance combining an audiovisual and a sound presentation where live voices and recorded sounds were mixed throughout the residency. It consisted of several ceramic pieces connected to each other by tubes, which functioned as a sounding board. Inside the pieces there were also loudspeakers that emitted the recordings.
The whole project was recorded live and then I continued adding voices from the lived experience. I had to enlist the help of different musicians, sound technicians and local artists to carry it out. The conversations and moments lived with them to prepare the performance became complicities and are an important part of the soul of the whole project.
